A fixture of the New York jazz scene for the past decade, vocalist and composer Aubrey Johnson brings her sextet to Birdland for the first time! Her debut album, Unraveled, consisting of her original compositions and arrangements was released on Outside In Music in 2020 to critical acclaim, and her second (duo with the pianist Randy Ingram) is due out in November 2022 on Sunnyside Records.
Aubrey is the niece of the late, great pianist Lyle Mays (Pat Metheny Group), and in 2021 she sang on and self-released his final album, Eberhard, which won the Grammy for “Best Instrumental Composition”. She can also be heard on Arturo O’Farrill’s Grammy Award-winning album, Four Questions, as well as Bobby McFerrin’s Grammy-nominated album VOCAbuLaries. A frequent “side-person”, Aubrey has sung on over 40 albums, including most recently Sara Serpa’s Intimate Strangers, Randy Napoleon’s Puppets, and Billy Childs’ Acceptance. In addition to her performing and recording, Aubrey is on faculty at Berklee College of Music, Queens College, and Montclair State University.
