Bonegasm
May 14 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Jennifer Wharton’s Bonegasm is proud to announce the May 14, 2023 performance at Birdland of all new compositions and arrangements before heading into the studio to record their third album, Grit & Grace.
Wharton returns with fellow trombonists John Fedchock, Nate Mayland, and Alan Ferber, along with the rhythm section of pianist Michael Eckroth, bassist Evan Gregor, and drummer Don Peretz. They will also be joined by percussionist Samuel Torres.
Wharton formed the band in 2017, commissioning composers and arrangers to celebrate all things trombone. The band has commissioned over 30 new jazz works and recorded two albums in the last 6 years. As the jazz community moves towards acknowledging and responding to the struggles of female musicians, Wharton decided to commission only women for this project and will contribute music of her own for the first time.
Music by trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis, pianist Carolina Calvache, bandleader Vanessa Perica, trombonist Natalie Cressman and Grammy-nominated composer Miho Hazama will be performed as well as some favorites from the two previous albums, Bonegasm (2019) and Not A Novelty (2021).
The overwhelming response to Bonegasm’s music has been astounding, cementing Wharton’s assertion that this assemblage was no flash in the pan but an important exponent of shaping the trombone’s place in jazz
music.
Jennifer Wharton’s Bonegasm is a recipient of a 2023 grant from Chamber Music America’s Artistic Projects program, funded through the generosity of The Howard Gilman Foundation, for Grit & Grace.
