Five American jazz stars on stage together: saxophone legend and Miles Davis’ former band member Dave Liebman; Grammy Award-winner Randy Brecker, whose trumpet playing can be heard on hundreds of albums, from Frank Sinatra and James Taylor to Bruce Springsteen and Frank Zappa; and Marc Copland, who is famous for his lyrical style. Also performing with the formation are Drew Gress on the bass and Joey Baron on the drums, both of whom stirred things up in the New York downtown avant-garde scene headed by John Zorn in the 1980s.

Here is a cohesive unit that knows how to leave room for each member to shine. While hardly youngsters, these cats aren’t sleepwalking; they are all still developing and building their craft. The result is music steeped in tradition, but not shy about taking chances. Exhibit A is their collaborative album Quint5t, which was released in 2020.
