Celebrating their new release and 10th anniversary, the all-women band formed by veteran Toronto jazz saxophonist Jane Bunnett with young female graduates of the Cuban Conservatory of Music, met at a Havana jam session. Maqueque has since won a Juno Award, been nominated for a GRAMMY® Award, and toured Europe, Latin America, The United States, and Canada. The band has expanded to include musicians from Zimbabwe, Dominican Republic, Latin America, Spain, and Lebanon. On “Playing With Fire,” much of the heat comes from guitarist Donna Grantis (who also hails from Toronto and performed for many years with Prince as a member of 3RDEYEGIRL) along with the debut of 19-year-old violinist Daniela Olano, sister of the band’s co-founder and pianist Danae Olano, vocalist Joanna Majoko, drummer Yissy Garcia, bassist Tailin Marrero, and percussionist Mary Paz.
